New Uncharted 3 Gameplay Footage Online January 6, 2011

Naughty Dog’s YouTube Profile has added a few more videos recently, probably in anticipation of CES. Entirely new HD gameplay sections of the highly anticipated PS3-exclusive, Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception.
First up, the footage you know, originally shown on the Jimmy Fallon show, this level is now being played by someone who knows what they’re doing.
Now, here’s the new footage never before seen.
It’s nice to see that Drake and Sullivan still have their banter. I have to say that some of my favorite gameplay segments of the first two Uncharted games were when I had to work with an AI controlled partner (usually Sullivan) to solve a puzzle. It looks like there’s no doubt this will continue.
Uncharted 3: Drake’s Decpetion is coming November 1st, 2011 exclusive to the Playstation 3.
Naughty Dog Releases Behind the Scenes of Uncharted 3 (Part 1) Online January 6, 2011

Title is still pretty self-explanatory here. This is the first part of what is slated to be a two-part behind the scenes documentary of the goings on at Naughty Dog, who are making the just announced Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception. This was previously only avalible to download on the Playstation Store, but now it’s up for all to see.
I have to say, this is the kind of behind the scenes documentary I can really enjoy. It’s not just a bunch of talking heads telling you how great their game is going to be. You see the workings of the studio while the people who are working on the game are telling you a chronological story.
I have to really give props to a line said by Richard McGonagle (who plays “Sully” Sullivan) when he was talking about what it’s like being a traditional actor working in a new medium. He reminded the audience that the original title of “actors” used to be “players”, and that still holds true to those who contribute to the stage. As a student of English with a BA, I can’t disagree with the logic.
I haven’t seen a production this good since the Halo 2 Documentary on that game’s Limited Collector’s Edition, and that was produced by Film Oasis. This is done by a company called 2-Player, and they did a really good job. Can’t wait to see Part 2. If this is what they did with just 8 minutes, I wonder what they could do with two hours.
Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception is coming November 2011 exclusive to the Playstation 3.
Dead Space iPhone is Coming January 5, 2011

The Dead Space Twitter feed has confirmed that a fully interactive 3D Dead Space game is coming to the various iOS devices pretty soon. This will not be a port of a previous Dead Space game, it will be its own story. It is also not going to be an interactive rail-shooter, a la Dead Space Extraction, it will be fully controllable, with full dismemberment options.
Currently the game has been confirmed multiple times to have native iPad support, but newer iPhone/iPod Touch support is assured as well by many development sources on the Dead Space forums.
There is one problem one of the previews has mentioned, EA is once again rearing its money-hungry head for options that a simple cheat code should be able to provide. While you can collect and upgrade weapons and armor in-game, you can also purchase upgraded weapons and armor as DLC from the start. I remember EA did this in the Xbox 360 version of The Godfather (and to some extent with Dante’s Inferno) and it did not go over well at all.
Dead Space is coming to iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch soon.
gameXcess.net is going to E3! January 4, 2011

Big news! I just got the confirmation letter from the organizers of the E3 Expo, confirming my eligibility to attend this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo!
This will be the first E3 I have attended in many years. I had previously attended E3s 2003 and 2004 on behalf of GameSpy. I also had been invited in 2002, but due to the fact that E3 required attendees to be over 18 at the time (it’s now 17), I was unable to attend.
I’d like to thank the E3 organization and their parent companies for allowing me to attend on behalf of my site. Rest assured I will be covering all I can with my cameras, demoing everything I can get my hands on and interviewing whoever will stand in front of me and take my questions. The hope is to spend the whole day on the show floor capturing all the video I can, and spend each night editing and uploading those videos. In anticipation of this, I’m going to bring the lightest cameras I can get my hands on, because I’ll be carrying them everywhere during the trip.
E3 2011 will be June 7th-9th, 2011 in Los Angeles, CA.
Project Natal Vs Kinect Follow Up January 3, 2011
Posted by Maniac in Editorials.1 comment so far
I’ve had a few days now to play around with the Kinect, the Xbox 360 perphial which formally went by the codename of Project Natal. While my previous article on Project Natal vs Kinect was based entirely upon my research, I wanted to write a bit of a follow-up to my earlier article which would include my personal experience with it. This article is going to provide a bit of updated information to the original article, and answer some of the questions I couldn’t. I recommend reading that article first before reading this. Now this will mostly revolve around the interface of the Kinect in the Xbox 360, and my experience using it, and compare that to what I had written in my original article, as well as provide deeper information on the perphial.
Well, first off I can give a ruling that the Kinect will be able to detect hand motions from any position. On startup the Kinect scans the room for its user and keeps the camera at the best perspective it needs to see them. Because of that, it will be able to scan you whether you’re sitting, squatting or standing and read your hands. You have to wave your hand slowly (which was something a friend of mine simply could not do correctly no matter what instruction the system and I gave them how to wave) in order for the system to recognize you want to use it, and then it treats your hand in the interface like the pointer to a wiimote. Since there’s no button, it detects what you want to select by how long you hold your hand over the option. It works well, so long as you don’t get too close to the camera, and it’s quite fun when you’re setting up your initial Xbox Live Avatar.
That split-screen soccer game I mentioned in the original article which if it wasn’t already out at the time of writing was probably going to be out by Christmas was in fact out when I wrote the article. I can confirm that the Kinect-Exclusive launch game Kinect Sports has a soccer mode which is more in-depth than just goaltending.
I’ve also gotten some experience with the facial recognition setup of the Kinect. When I initially theorized in the article that in order for the Kinect to take a 3D model of its user for later purposes, you would need to stand in front of the Kinect and do a very specific series of turns while it took pictures of you and mapped it onto your 3D model, I said there was no incentive for the user to do this. It turns out that this is EXACTLY how it sets up facial recognition, so there is some incentive for the user to do it. Unfortunately I’m currently unable to set it up myself, as my room is set up in such a way that if I was to follow the moves that Kinect wants me to do in order to map my 3D body, I would need to saw off half of my bed and sledgehammer through my wall. Fortunately the facial recognition system is optional and you don’t have to add it to your Xbox profile if you don’t want to.
As for my experiences with the audio recognition system, they were mixed. There is an audio interface built into the new Xbox 360 dashboard when you have a Kinect plugged in, which will respond to you whenever you say the word, “XBOX” clearly enough for the system to hear it. You really have to talk to it like you’re commanding it, otherwise it might not pick up on the word. Unfortunately, if you’re in the regular controller interface, you have to first tell it to bring up the Kinect-specific dashboard by saying, “KINECT” right after saying, “XBOX”. Only from there can you give it commands like “Play Disc”, “Next Menu”, “Open/Close Tray”, or “Cancel”. If you try to skip the Kinect menu and give it one of the commands without booting it, like if you just want it to open your disc tray because you’re lazy, it won’t listen to you from the normal menu. However, you can also wave and use your hand to command the Kinect menu if you’d rather not wake up everyone in your house by commanding the tv. You still can’t turn the Xbox on and off by voice, something a lot of people are still disappointed about as it was something that was initially promised.
Update: The Fall 2011 dashboard update has changed a lot of what was initially written here. You can turn the Xbox 360 off by voice command while in the Xbox dashboard. The dashboard can also be operated by Kinect voice command without having to go into a seperate menu.
There was no bigger disappointment for me than the Kinect Video Chat program. It is completely different than what was shown in the video. Wheras the girl was able to get one of her friends immediately to Kinect chat with her, I have only one friend who actually has an Xbox 360 with a Kinect at the time of writing, and he so far has refused to take any Kinect chat call I send him! Then there’s the interface, it doesn’t seem to accept voice commands, and so far I’ve only been able to use it with either a controller or hand motions. This is probably because the Kinect chat system sorts people by their gamertag, not their real names, and we all know that the pronunciation of a lot of people’s gamertags are debatable. There’s also the video quality of the chat, which I can only say is total shit, even locally. I think the Xbox Live Vision Camera offered a more fluid FPS in that camera than the Kinect offers. Like I theorized, because the Kinect’s camera is not HD (any), on an HDTV setup, the chat windows would have to keep windowed or the image would blur. Well they are windowed, and on a 1080p TV screen like I have, you can still see a minor blur. But the blur is just not as bad as the non fluid motion of your local image. This to me was the biggest disappointment of the Kinect. The Kinect chat was supposed to be a whole new way of communication between two people, moving us one step closer to what was possible in Back to the Future Part II when an older Marty talked to an older Needles on the big screen HDTV in his den. Instead, it feels like a webcam chat when you’re using two crappy cameras. In fact the program happily announces to you that it uses the webcam software which is part of Windows Live Messenger, so now I know who to blame. I’d like to tell you what the experience is like when two people could talk, and what I have to wave my hand over to help me try out dresses, but like I said, the only friend I have with a Kinect refuses to even plug it into his Xbox 360 when he’s not gaming on it (which definitely tells you something), making having a Kinect video chat experience unlikely for me.
Well that’s my follow-up on the Kinect. I went a little deeper into what is actually being offered by these cameras opposed to what was initially promised in E3 2009 back when it was called Project Natal. Hope you enjoyed it!
Dead Space Save File Unlocks Original Plasma Cutter in Dead Space 2 January 2, 2011
Posted by Maniac in Game News.add a comment
That title is pretty much self explanatory. EA has announced today that if you have any original Dead Space file on your console of choice, that save file, when carried over to Dead Space 2, will unlock you an exclusive weapon, the original Plasma Cutter.
This is another example of a nice trend that seems to be forming in games over the past three or so years. Original save files from Gears of War would unlock special mutliplayer characters in Gears of War 2, but what was unlocked was dependant on your progress in the original game. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves would unlock free in-game currency depending on your unlocked trophies in the save file of the original Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune. You could unlock the most money by having the Platinum Trophy. And of course, a save brought over storyline important information from Mass Effect 1 to Mass Effect 2.
This is not the only thing that will net you free goodies in Dead Space 2. Also be aware for players who complete Dead Space Ignition, the downloadable game released for free to those who preorder Dead Space 2, you will unlock a special outfit.
Xbox 360 HD Transfer Follow Up January 1, 2011
Posted by Maniac in Uncategorized.add a comment
Happy New Year everyone, I just want to post a small followup to the Xbox 360 Data Transfer How To I posted earlier this week.
I discovered that there is some data that the transfer process just won’t bother with. This is likely just for transfer time reasons and not for DRM-related reasons.
- It will not transfer over any of your disc-installed games. You’ll have to re-install any of your game discs to the new Xbox 360. Full game data can range anywhere from 6-8GB on average per game. It’s actually faster to just reinstall the games from the disc to wait for the USB transfer cable to send them from one HD to another.
- It will not transfer over your game patches. Those range in space from 2-4MB and no I don’t have a good reason to list why they would not include these. You’ll have to repatch all of your games individually by booting them up while connected to Xbox Live and choosing to download the patch. Your games will have to be patched in some cases to play certain DLC.
- When you finish the process, the Xbox 360 will wipe your original hard drive. If you try using it in another Xbox 360 (or your old one) you’ll find it’s been blanked. This is normal. Feel free to sell it if you wish.
