Final Fantasy Deals May 31, 2012

Inspired by the reviews of The Spoony One and after years of hearing praise for them by his peers,  Maniac just bought a shipment of brand new older games from a very famous (and infamous) game series, Final Fantasy.

He had been meaning to get the games for quite a long time and couldn’t pass them up at their current prices.  The problem was that while he got a great deal on the games he purchased, he couldn’t explain why there were other games in the series (which had been re-released just as many times as the other games) which had prices through the roof.

What did he pick up?  How much did they cost?  What is he looking for?  Check out the video and find out.

Square.  Take a look at the popularity of your back catalog.  Reprint them.

More Terms You Should Know (Console and Japanese RPGs) May 31, 2012

Given the subject matter of the next site video is classic Japanese Role Playing Games I thought it was time to talk about a web page that for over ten years I have personally cited back to as the encyclopedia all gamers and game developers should be aware of.

The Grand List of Console Role Playing Game Clichés is a web page which details all the major and minor clichés you will find in most classic role playing games. The site’s focus is on console, or Japanese RPGs, not western, live action, or pen and paper, but just that one genre alone has spawned so many games just reading the clichés almost feels like you’re reading a history article about the whole genre.

The site stopped updating around 2005, and the webmaster stated that he felt comfortable he had found all of them. While its no longer updated the site is still up and active for all to see, and I think it serves as a perfect time capsule for these games and the memories we have playing them.

If you haven’t read it before, check it out. If you have read it before, but just not in a really long time, take a look at it again it’s a great trip down memory lane.

You can expect a new site video later today!

Doom 3 BFG Edition Announced May 30, 2012

Today, Bethesda has announced the Doom 3 BFG Edition.  The game will re-release all of the major releases in the Doom series, including Doom, Doom II, and of course Doom 3 and its expansion pack Resurrection of Evil.  The game is coming to more than just the PC, it is also being ported to the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.

Doom 3 BFG Edition will also include the “lost mission”.  The blog does not go into specifics about what this is, but the trailer does state that new never before seen levels will be included, and the “lost mission” may be what it is referring to.

The game has been remastered for HDTV support as well as 3D for the PS3 version.  I find this quite interesting.  While Doom 3 has always supported higher resolutions with its original PC version, Doom 3 never officially supported widescreen resolutions in its PC version.  It was only brought into the game when it was added unofficially with a patch and required the end-user to do a few console tweaks.  Later it was officially used in the Doom 3 version for the original Xbox.

Now that’s one Big…um…freaking…gun.  Or at least that’s what was written in Quake II’s manual under the description of the BFG.

The Doom 3 BFG Edition is coming to Xbox 360 and PS3.

After a brief hiatus, we have a brand new episode of Mind of Maniac, a completely unscripted series where Maniac talks his mind about gaming and other gaming related topics chosen by himself and site visitors!

Maniac spent Memorial Day Weekend playing Sorcery for the Playstation Move. After beating the game, he sure has a lot to say about it.

If you have any ideas about topics for future videos, please feel free to post a comment!

The Science of Magic in Sorcery May 29, 2012

On this site I have my own written series, Science Check, where I take concepts and events which are presented in specific video games and determine if the video game is accurate with its scientific presentation or if it is not.

Well, looks like I can’t do one of these for the video game Sorcery. Why? Because Sony has already beat me to it, and they had their own scientific expert demonstrate it for all of you.

Sorcery is out now exclusive to the Playstation 3. Playstation Move required.

Halo 4 Behind the Scenes Videos May 29, 2012

I know we’re all really looking forward to what will probably be a major showing for Halo 4 at this year’s Microsoft E3 Press Conference, but until that happens 343 Industries and Microsoft has released very little Halo 4 related video content, particularly about the game’s single player campaign.

I went scouring through the Halo Waypoint Channel and found some interesting videos I haven’t seen anywhere else, including the Halo Waypoint itself, about the team at 343 Industries that is making this highly anticipated next game, and I think they’re really worth a look.

As I’m sure you know from previous posts I’ve done, I’ve always considered the making-of documentaries for the Halo games to be the gold standard of quality for video game Special Edition releases.  I sure can’t wait to see what they have in store for us for Halo 4’s Limited Edition.

Halo 4 is coming November 6th, 2012 exclusive to the Xbox 360.

Maniac decided to treat himself to the Playstation Move exclusive game Sorcery, which, even though has been recently released has been very difficult to find people selling it.  The game really wowed him when it was first shown off at the Sony E3 2009 Press Conference and he had been waiting anxiously, Playstation Move in hand, for the day to come when the game would be released.

Bit of a note on this video.  When Maniac picked it up at Best Buy earlier today he noticed the disc sounded loose in the case and this video was recorded to see if the game needed to be returned.

Hilarious Lollipop Chainsaw Trailer May 26, 2012

Ladies and gentlemen, the developers of Lollipop Chainsaw have something they want to show to all of you.

Yeah, looks like they have some bugs to still work out on this one.

It’s nice to see that these developers still have a sense of humor over the games that they are making.  I don’t think I’ve seen some seriously funny videos to promote a game since Alan Wake was released on the Xbox 360.

No, there’s no Lollipop Chainsaw Special Edition but the normal edition of Lollipop Chainsaw is coming June 12th, 2012 to the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3.

The Making of Halo 2 May 24, 2012

No, the above isn’t a typo, we’re going to have a serious blast from the past today.  In 2004, Bungie and Microsoft released Halo 2, which was probably one of the biggest releases of that year.  To co-inside with the game’s release, Microsoft and Bungie also released a Halo 2 Limited Collector’s Edition with a $60US price tag.  For the ten-dollar premium, you got one hell of a value.

The Halo 2 Limited Collector’s Edition was a major release which set the tone for all CEs of that era.  Coming in a fantastic Steelbook case and including a unique manual and reference booklet, Halo 2 Limited Collector’s Edition included a bonus DVD which had on it many fantastic documentaries with huge production values.  The main feature of that disc, the video I’m about to show you all, is what I consider to be the finest behind the scenes documentary about a video game ever made.

Bungie has decided to release that documentary for all to see, (not just those who have the Halo 2 Limited Collector’s Edition) and I highly recommend watching it to see just what set the bar for all “making of” documentaries to follow.  Developers, take notice.  If this doesn’t prime you for Halo 4 I don’t know what will.

For the 12th gameXcess.net Podcast, the topic is Max Payne, and boy do I have a lot to say about these games.  My history with this series goes quite deep and because of the release of Max Payne 3 last week, I thought now was the perfect time to talk about all of it.

I talk about my first exposure to the game series, the three games, the movie, and how this franchise became such an important part of my career.
