Gaming History You Should Know – The History of DisneyQuest June 20, 2020

It’s Sunday and we’re back with another Gaming History You Should Know, where we highlight some of the best independently produced gaming documentaries from across the Internet. Today, we’re going to tell a story about a well-themed arcade that just didn’t work out.
Children of the 80s probably remember the earlier days of Atari and Namco machines, and would flock to arcades to play games like PAC-MAN and Missile Command. Then, the crash of ‘82 happened and arcades began to evaporate. It would take a decade for a new generation of games to bring the arcade back. When I was a child in the early 90s, the arcades were packed with cutting edge titles like Mortal Kombat and Lethal Enforcers. By the end of the 90s, improved technology gave us more immersive games like Jurassic Park, Cruisin’ USA and Area 51. With the success of games like that, lots of arcades began to take chances on not only new games or new technlogies, but new ways to design their arcades to bring in newer players. Virtual Reality (VR) was offered as an option in some venues, but it was costly and the technology wasn’t there to provide the fast-paced realistic games that the platform demanded. Most VR players who tried the technology at the time weren’t happy with it.
In the early 2000s, Disney looked at the success of arcades and decided the time was right to throw the weight of their company behind a new venture. Disney has always been known as one of the most technology advanced companies in the world, with their films, television and theme parks wowing audiences since way before I was born. Disney has always been the best at providing a well-themed immersive experience to their customers, and that was exactly what was needed at the turn of the millennium.
As VR arcades started taking off, Disney decided to launch their own Disney-Branded VR arcade franchise, DisneyQuest. Two DisneyQuests were built at launch, with one in Chicago, Illinois and the other at Disney World in Orlando, Florida. For $36 US at entry, guests could come in and play all of the games on display, including tons of exclusive attractions you couldn’t play anywhere else. If successful, the plan was to open more venues all across North America.
So did DisneyQuest work? Sadly no. The third DisneyQuest venue in Philadelphia, PA was cancelled mid-construction. Chicago’s venue closed first after just a few brief years, but with the heavy tourist traffic of Walt Disney World, DisneyQuest Orlando was successful enough on its own to limp along without much further investment for nearly two decades before it finally shuttered.
So if DisneyQuest had the financial backing and access to the same high-end technology as used by one of the most successful companies in the world, why did it fail? Defunctland is an online documentary series created and hosted by a man who calls himself Kevin Perjurer. It focuses on the history of theme park rides and attractions that are no longer in operation. It also covers attractions that got far along in preproduction but were never built. It’s well researched and edited, with Kevin’s narration keeping you on the edge of your seat throughout the video. A while ago, Kevin took a look at the DisneyQuest franchise, went into its history and its demise. If you wanted to see what you could’ve done at this place in its heyday, give this a watch.
I must admit I have personally visited the DisneyQuest in Orlando, Florida but only once during a family vacation. The most impressive thing I remember from it was their Cyber Space Mountain simulator, which I challenged my cousin to ride with me. We both ended up having a great time on that trip, but seven years later when I visited the park again, I remember feeling that there was no need to check DisneyQuest out again. Perhaps that is why the venue failed, there was no incentive for repeat customers, something an arcade desperately needs to survive. Recently, arcades are seeing a resurgence with the success of venues like Dave and Busters and I have happily spent many free nights there for a happy hour special and some games. Everybody gets hungry and thirsty, and D&B’s decision to offer decent food with a constantly improving selection of new arcade games (in my opinion) succeeded where DisneyQuest failed.

Star Wars Squadrons – EA Play Live 2020 Gameplay Trailer June 18, 2020

If there was one reason to watch this year’s EA Play Live 2020 it was the first gameplay reveal of Star Wars Squadrons. Squadrons is like a reimagining of the classic PC title X-Wing Vs Tie-Fighter. The game will have a single-player story and a 5-on-5 multiplayer mode with a variety of different game types including cooperative play against AI-controlled opponents. Oh and did I mention this game was going to support VR out of the box?
In this case I’m reminded of the fact that words mean nothing and what you all want to see is the game in action. Please proceed.
Star Wars Squadrons is coming October 2, 2020 to PC, PS4 and Xbox One.

My Thoughts on the First Pokemon Presents Stream June 17, 2020

The first Pokémon Presents stream was held this morning and we have a ton of new announcements to go through. It was an incredible way to kick off this new format of video announcements and I’m going to break everything that was said down for you.
1. DLC1, the Isle of Armor is out for Pokémon Sword/Shield and you can play it if you purchase the expansion pass on the eShop.
If you already purchased the Expansion Pass off the eShop just update your game and get back into it. Also update Pokemon Home while you’re at it. I’m loving the first expansion so far, since there’s a lot to do in it with an enormous wild area to explore with tons of classic Pokémon returning. I’ve been throwing my PokéBalls left and right. The issue I see is it’s got a serious level grind (All Wild Pokémon are level 60) and one of the challenges requires you to take a low level Pokémon an level it to at least 70. That said it has fun collectibles although those Diglett are near impossible to find in some areas.
2. Pokemon Smile is out free for iOS/Android devices.
It’s free so there’s no reason not to at least test it out but I’m clearly not the intended demographic for it. I tried it out and am currently unable to angle my phone in a way to have the camera see my face while I’m brushing unless I’m brushing while on my knees. Children would probably have a lot of fun with it.
3. Mega Evolution is coming to Pokémon Go. Also, you can find Galarian Far’fetched if you play Pokémon Go right now.
Can’t comment on Mega Evolution since that’s not really out yet. However, it was a GEN6 staple…even though Pokémon from earlier Gens could do it. Does this mean we will see GEN6 Pokémon come into Go yet? As for the limited-time event, Far’Fetched found in this event do not evolve into Sir’Fetched. That is a huge bummer but when you take into account that far’fetched are not supposed to even spawn in the US at all, if you previously missed an opportunity to get one, nows your time to rectify that.
4. New Pokémon Snap!!! No seriously that’s it’s title.
I know a guy online who will be very happy about this announcement. It looks incredible can’t wait to play it myself. Honestly I don’t care if it’s merely a remaster of the first game with new Pokémon or if it’s a sequel. Pokémon Snap is a beloved game that deserves attention, it was probably one of the most fondly remembered of the Pokémon spin-off games by the mainstream Nintendo audience.
5. Pokémon Cafe Mix is up for preorder!
This game looks cute but that’s not all I have to say about it. A Pokémon Cafe exists in the real world and it looks almost exactly like this! Now can we get more of them, I want to drink a latte with a Pikachu in the foam! Anyways you can preorder this for free on your platform of choice, iOS, Android, or Switch
6. Mythical Gigantamax Event in Sword and Shield for 1,000,000 player defeats of Zeraora.
Can’t comment on how I feel about this. Don’t know anyone who would want to do it with me and I really don’t think I have a chance by myself. I do think it’s great that all players can benefit together for a combined goal. That is typically the component that makes Pokémon Go Fests so much fun!
That’s not all! Another Pokémon Presents will stream next week. We still haven’t heard a peep about Pokémon Sleep or Detective Pikachu 2 (Nintendo Switch) yet so my fingers are still crossed those will finally be revealed.

It’s been ten years since one of my favorite games ever made was released on the Playstation 3, Heavy Rain. Now, the developers at Quantic Dream have produced an episodic retrospective series about the game’s development and legacy. Currently, two episodes have been posted in the series but more might be coming. If you’re interested in the game, want to learn more about its development, or are just a fan of Quantic Dream, give it a watch!
Heavy Rain is out now for PC, PS3 and PS4.
