Shortly after the release of the first Metal Gear Solid Collection (Vol 1), the gang here at GameXcess.net mused about what we would predict Konami would consider including in a highly likely Volume 2. Now we know only three of the five games we predicted will be included int he next game, and Volume 2 is going to be released this August. So with a track record of three out of five (with 100 percent accuracy on the three games that are being included in Vol 2), we decided to make our picks for the inevitable third volume. Let’s be honest, there’s still lots of Metal Gear games that were not included in the previous two volumes, and we wanted to share what our predictions were to be included in an inevitable Volume 3.
Metal Gear Rising – An incredible stealth action game which continued the Metal Gear story after the events of MGS4, Rising puts you back in the boots of Raiden, and gives you a sword that can literally “cut at will”. I loved everything about this game when it originally released including the graphics, the gameplay, and the original soundtrack! Since the game was only released for the PS3/Xbox 360 generation, it might be as time consuming to do a port to modern platforms as Metal Gear Solid 4 has been, but I know a PC version of the game exists, and using that version of the game as a base may make a port to modern consoles more convenient. I just hope a re-release of this game includes all the exclusive preorder DLC skins.
Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops – In my opinion, it was a huge mistake for this game be left out from the previous volume, as this is still a very cited canonical event in the Metal Gear timeline that few people have actually had the chance to play for themselves. I don’t want to rehash the points we made in the previous article, as my opinions on why this should be included have not changed.
Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes and Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain – Originally released as two separate games but later re-released as a a bundled product, we’re going to include these two games as a single entry in this list. The final Metal Gear games directed by the iconic Hideo Kojima, this prequel takes place between the events of Metal Gear Solid 3 and Metal Gear for the MSX and shows the downfall of Big Boss and the inspiration for his views on the future of war. The game is still played on modern platforms (due to backwards compatibility) so it should not be super difficult to port them to the current platforms with “enhanced” graphics, or support for 4K HDR output. Can you imagine sneaking around an open desert environment with a glorious expanded color spectrum? It would add a whole new dimension to the gameplay, and I absolutely want to play it!
So what about a bonus game? Well, if the GBA version of Metal Gear Solid in the previous volume can allow for non-canonical games to be included in these volumes, I think some attention could be paid for these next two games.
Metal Gear Ac!d 1 and Metal Gear Ac!d 2 – While these games were released on the Sony PSP before Portable Ops and Peace Walker, these may be more difficult to port, and could be considered closer to the Metal Gear MSX games. What about the PSP’s launch title Metal Gear Ac!d? Developed as a digital tradition card turn-based strategy game to make good early use of the PSP’s hardware, the game is was never considered canon to the MGS franchise, but features plenty of nods to the expanded universe. I know the turn-based gameplay might be considered quaint by today’s standard’s, but the games did have far-out stories and the first game had an art style that fit in perfectly with the franchise’s aesthetics. In fact, it was one of the first games I got for my launch-day PSP! Meanwhile, you can’t talk about Metal Gear Ac!d without also discussing its follow up Metal Gear Ac!d 2! Released on the same day as MGS3: Subsistance, it even included features that integrated with that game, such as a 3D camera that you could use in conjunction with your PSP and a set of cardboard lenses! Ac!d 2 refined the card-based gameplay and had a unique comic book inspired art style that made it stand out from the other games in the best way. It is a real shame we have not been able to play either game in nearly two decades.
Metal Gear Solid Collection Vol 2 is coming August 2026.
