Happy Dragon Quest Day 2026! May 27, 2026

Today is a massive anniversary! Forty years ago today, the very first Dragon Quest game was released in Japan for the 8-bit Nintendo console. Created by Yuji Horii with art from A. Toriyama, Dragon Quest set the standard for Japanese (or if you prefer, console) Role Playing Games.

On the anniversary of the release, the team on Square Enix who has been tasked with making the next mainline title in the Dragon Quest series has released this video….alongside a few more goodies! Let’s take a look:

That’s not all! We also got an official announcement that Dragon Quest XI Definitive Edition is coming to the Nintendo Switch 2! Sadly there does not appear to be an upgrade option for current owners of the original Switch version.

Reports are also coming in of exclusive bonuses for players of the new Dragon Quest Smash/Grow mobile game as well!
