Sony UMD Retrospective July 19, 2017

In the mid to late 2000s, Sony intended to make the PlayStation Portable the ultimate portable media device. Not only could it play games, it could also play digital music and movies on the go.  To show its versatility, Sony bundled an initial shipment of PSP systems with the UMD version of the film Spider-Man 2, one of the best movies of the previous year.

Shortly after the PSP launched, the UMD Video format saw higher than expected sales, and various movie studios started to release their films in the UMD video format.
