Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 ReMiX Announced October 15, 2013

The Kingdom Hearts series has served as the perfect meeting of Disney and Square characters, and features a gripping storyline that has spanned across multiple games across tons of different platforms. Right off the heels of the fantastic Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Remix release, Disney and Square Enix have announced that three more of the Kingdom Hearts games will be remastered for the Playstation 3 in 2014 in the form of Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 ReMIX.
Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix will be very similar to the previously remastered Kingdom Hearts HD release in that it will include two full games from the Kingdom Hearts series remastered for the Playstation 3, and all the remastered cinematics from a game that was originally exclusive to the Nintendo DS. Also like the previous HD rerelease, the 2.5 HD ReMIX will include the Final Mix versions of the PS2 exclusive Kingdom Hearts II and PSP exclusive Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep. These Final Mix versions of the games were previously only released in Japan and include a lot of new content and features not in the original North American releases. And like with the 1.5 HD ReMIX the game will include all the cinematics, but not the gameplay, from a previously Nintendo DS exclusive game, Kingdom Hearts RE: Coded.
So how is this game going to look in HD? Just have a look for yourselves!
I’m really excited about this. Kingdom Hearts II is my favorite game of the Kingdom Hearts series and I’m so happy that I’ll finally be able to play the Final Mix version of the game in glorious HD. Also, I’m sure that Sony hardware purists who never owned a DS will be excited to get the chance to see the events that happened in Kingdom Hearts RE: Coded in anticipation for the eventual release of Kingdom Hearts III.
Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 ReMIX is coming in 2014 exclusive to the PS3.
We Have a New Site Banner October 13, 2013

In 2010, GameXcess.net had a logo created for us by graphic artist Matt Jersey. It was a beautiful piece of art which stayed with this site as it grew larger. I felt it embodied what our site stood for, a Generation X feel in modern day. It had a good run, but I felt that after three years of operation, GameXcess.net needed a refreshing new take on our logo. Today, Princess Angel has created a brand new banner for the site, and it is my pleasure to announce its premiere. Effective immediately, GameXcess.net is now using Princess Angel’s new site logo as our banner.
Many thanks to those of you who have stayed with us through the years. You can expect much more from us as we continue to move forward.

The Video Game Handheld War Part 9 October 6, 2013
Posted by Maniac in Histories, Video Game Handheld War.add a comment
Times were changing and while the hardware was still being revised on a regular basis, we were still in the middle of the handheld war between the Nintendo DS and the Sony Playstation Portable. Previously, Nintendo had launched its highly successful DSi, a camera equipped DS which allowed for digital game downloads, and Sony had just released their third revision to the Playstation Portable, dubbed the PSP-3000. Based upon sales, the Sony PSP was still trailing behind the Nintendo DS, but the landscape for what would make for a video game handheld system was about to be completely changed.
After the failure of the UMD Video format, Sony set their sights digitally. Apple’s iTunes store had seen a major influx of customers after they released the iPhone. After the release of the second iPhone, the iPhone 3G, many critics believed that Smartphones would be the future of portable gaming platforms and not dedicated handheld gaming systems. This was a worrying prospect for everyone, and Sony was determined to take drastic steps to prevent the PSP platform from becoming obsolete. Sony had already established a hugely popular online store for the PS3 which offered full game downloads, add-ons, trailers, and more for download, and Sony was ready to bring it to the PSP. Also, portable storage was getting cheaper. By this point in time, with the low price and larger capacity, PSP’s Memory Stick offered players a lot more options than UMD could, and unlike UMD, digital downloads cost nothing to manufacture and ran no risk of running out of inventory. Soon, Nintendo would not be the only handheld game system with an online store.
Sony decided to go further with the idea and designed an entirely digital PSP. Sony completely redesigned the PSP’s form factor to slide open, making it look and feel more like a modern day cell phone. However, there were a lot of downsides to this new system. First off, it would be using entirely new standards for everything, making currently existing PSP peripherals and external storage incompatible. The device would have 16 GB of its own internal storage, with the option of expanding memory using Memory Stick Micro. It would also feature no UMD drive at all, making it incompatible with all retail PSP games. Dubbed the PSP Go, it would ship at a price of $249 US…which was $50 dollars more expensive than the already released PSP-3000, which had nearly all the same features of the PSP Go and a UMD drive.
In 2009, Nintendo released a larger model DSi, dubbed the DSi XL. The intention was to release a larger handheld with all the functionality of the DSi, including access to the popular DSiware store, but with a larger screens. The DSi XL would be the final DS model to get released from the DS line. Sadly, Nintendo chose not to bring the GBA slot back with the new system, making the entire DSi line of handhelds incompatible with GBA games or DS peripherals that made use of the GBA slot, like the Rumble Pack. However, this turned out to be a moot issue, as DSi XL owners were buying their systems to play the fantastic library of DS games that were already available and the DS games that would be coming soon.
The PSP Go launched just in time for Christmas 2009, and by all intents and purposes it was Dead on Arrival. Most users thought that the PSP Go was the stupidest idea that Sony had ever had and they couldn’t believe Sony actually brought it to retail. Any regular model PSP would have access to the digital Playstation Store and so long as they had a Memory Stick with enough space, they could download all of the same content that a PSP Go could. On top of that the PSP Go had an incredibly unfair price premium over the most recent model PSP, and yet without a UMD drive it could not play any retail PSP game! If a user didn’t have access to a WiFi hotspot with internet access, the PSP Go was useless, unlike an iPhone owner who could download content through the wireless phone service. This made it the most illogical handheld upgrade ever and current PSP owners decided to stick with their systems. Gamers knew Sony was expecting them to pay extra money for what was essentially a crippled PSP, and they did not have any interest in it.
In fact, many retailers worldwide were uneasy about stocking it, not just because of its high price point and the bad word of mouth, but brick and mortar stores were angry that Sony was planning to cut them out of possible revenue from the system’s games. Sony assured retailers that was not their intention, and retailers would have the opportunity to sell prepaid digital game codes for many of the PSP’s most popular games at the time of the PSP Go’s launch.
Aside from a few curious adopters, the PSP Go did not sell. Reviews for the device were lukewarm to terrible, as critics believed the device did not merit the high price point. However, while the PSP Go was by all accounts a complete failure and a big black eye for Sony, the online marketplace set up to be used by the PSP Go was a resounding success. Playstation Portable owners hoping to get their hands on older games that were no longer in print finally had the chance to download all the games they wanted. With the low price and high capacity of external Memory Sticks, the storage capability on the PSP could in theory get just as large as what a stock PSP Go could offer. No matter how many price drops Sony did on the PSP Go, no one would buy it, and the system, as well as the peripherals for it, collected dust on retail shelves. However, the digital download codes that Sony offered to retailers, since they worked on any model PSP, sold quite well. There are still plenty of people who do not have credit cards or are unwilling to use them for digital purchases, and retailers made a smart decision by offering downloadable game codes, as well as Playstation Network Gift Cards, at retail.
Meanwhile as Sony floundered with the PSP Go’s launch, Nintendo had entered in unimaginable success with the DSi systems. Now, Nintendo prepared their fifth generation Pokémon game launch, and the second generation to appear on the DS platform. Previously, a new Pokémon generation game (not including remakes) would launch on a new Nintendo platform, but the success of the DS was so great that Nintendo chose to release the newest Pokémon games to the same platform as the previous ones. The fifth generation games would be called Pokémon Black and Pokémon White. Normally, a Pokémon game’s release would go on to become the biggest selling games on Nintendo’s handheld platform, but Pokémon’s popularity had started to wane since the release of the DS. By this point there were so many other great games on the DS that were huge system sellers, a Pokémon game released so late into the platform’s lifespan just could not make up those sales, but Black and White sure tried. When the games were released, they gave a great boost to the franchise’s popularity and went on to become staple games for the platform. In fact Pokémon Black & Pokémon White were so popular they remain the first Pokémon games to not receive a special third game in their generation like Pokémon Yellow or Pokémon Platinum. They were also the first Pokémon games that would go on to get direct sequels in the form of Pokémon Black 2 and Pokémon White 2, but I’ll get more into those games at a later time.
In 2011, Sony officially announced they had discontinued the PSP Go. Nintendo on the other hand was still doing phenomenally with their entire DS line, and the DSi XL still can be found at retail to this day. In the end, the Sony Playstation Portable could not compete with the overpowering success of the Nintendo DS brand, which if you take into account combined sales of all their different DS models, made the DS the second best-selling console of all time. However, Sony’s PSP cannot be considered a complete failure. While UMD never took off in the way that Sony had hoped when they designed the format, the PSP itself offered a lot of features that gamers liked, including MP3 Music and MP4 Video playback, Internet Browser, and support for streaming Podcasts. The fact that it allowed its internal software to be updated on a regular basis offered gamers the opportunity to receive new features, and to this day no game console goes without some sort of update feature. Also, the PSP Go’s online digital network laid the groundwork for a fantastic digital game marketplace to already be in place by the time Sony’s next handheld would hit the market, but that’s a story that is still being written.
Taco Bell Playstation 4 Giveaway Contest Review October 3, 2013

Okay. They’re doing it again. Taco Bell and Sony have once again partnered up to tie a huge early console giveaway to their Five Buck Box.
Anyone who picks up a Taco Bell Five Buck Box (and there are two currently available at my local Taco Bell) during the span of this promotional period has the chance to win a Playstation 4 early. In order to enter the contest, you just have to text the secret code printed on the side of your Five Buck Box to Taco Bell from your cellphone and send a follow up text to accept the contest’s terms of service. You’ll get a text back almost immediately with the notification if you won or not.
Now, I mentioned before that Sony and Taco Bell have done something like this before. In fact, they did almost the exact same kind of promotion just before the Playstation Vita was released. That promotion ended with a huge black eye for Taco Bell, as many legitimate winners complained about being falsely denied their prizes due to an insecure prize website. Taco Bell’s Vita site was slow and made it very difficult for winners to redeem their prize.
In case you were wondering if Taco Bell ironed out the glitches from the last time around read on. The fact that Taco Bell chose not to have redemption through a website was probably a smart move. The downside is of course that you will need to have a cell phone with a text message plan and be willing to pay applicable texting rates to redeem your code. I have to say that the text message system was working perfectly fine when I entered the contest. It was extremely convenient to enter the contest, much more convenient than if I was entering online.
Once again, I’m glad that this promotion exists because it is honestly encouraging to see video gaming front and center in a mainstream business like Taco Bell. The chance to get an early Playstation 4, one of the three major consoles in this future generation, is nothing to slouch at. In case you’re wondering, I didn’t win but you can’t base the merits of a contest based on the fact that you won. Let’s face it, the odds don’t look good that you will win. Taco Bell promises they are awarding a winner every fifteen minutes. If you’re feeling lucky, pick up a Five Buck Box and enter.
Let’s Play BEYOND: Two Souls Demo October 3, 2013

Sony released the BEYOND: Two Souls demo to little fanfare yesterday. The game is one of the final major PS3 exclusive releases this year before the launch of the PS4 and it could very well be one of the best looking games on the platform. In it, you follow Jodie Holmes, a girl with a supernatural connection, which could be considered a gift or a curse.
The demo is a little over 3GB and includes two scenes in the game that can be played however you wish. While these scenes have previously been shown in preview.
Here is the entire demo with Maniac’s commentary.
If you prefer to watch without commentary, please watch the video below.
You can download the demo right now off the Playstation Network store. BEYOND: Two Souls is coming October 8th, 2013 exclusive to the Playstation 3.
Rest in Peace, Tom Clancy October 2, 2013

It is my unfortunate duty to inform all of you that writer Tom Clancy has died at the age of 66. While I’m sure many of you remember him for penning the books that would become blockbuster movies like The Hunt for Red October or Patriot Games, his work has also inspired many of the most popular video game series of all time including Rainbow Six and Splinter Cell. He has been heavily inspired by the trials and tribulations of our day, starting with penning books inspired by the events of the Cold War and moving in the more recent years to books that have talked about cyberwarfare and international counterterrorism.
After Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six made a huge impact in the PC market, I decided to give his original book Rainbow Six a read during my sophomore year of High School, and I have to say I loved every word. What an ending! After reading Without Remorse that summer, I decided to read every single one of his Jack Ryan books, and I spent most of my free time in High School and my first year of College reading every single one of his fiction novels, It was so cool that he chose to include a small follow up to Rainbow Six by including the characters from Team Rainbow in The Bear and the Dragon. His final Jack Ryan novel, The Teeth of the Tiger, was something I read every break I had from working the summer it was released.
Today, his name still lives on in entirely new game properties coming out from Ubisoft, like Tom Clancy’s The Agency, which was announced at this year’s E3. Rest in Peace good sir.
Playstation 3 Firmware 4.50 Released October 2, 2013
Posted by Maniac in Game News.add a comment
For those of you who may be trying to log into the Playstation Network today, I just want to inform you that Sony released a new firmware for the PS3 some time last night. The newest firmware for the PS3, version 4.50, adds a lot of new features to the PS3 along with the usual bug fixes and optimizations.
You will be able to disable the visibility of trophies on your PSN account. You will still be able to unlock trophies during gameplay, but you will now be able to remove the visibility of certain trophies you have collected. This will prevent other players from seeing your trophies when looking up your Playstation Network account. The new firmware will also bring automatic background updates to all PS3 users. Previously this was a Playstation Plus only feature, but now it can be used by any PS3 owner. Finally PS Vita owners with a PS3 will now be able to transfer data and games wirelessly between their PS Vita and PS3. Previously, in order to transfer games between the two platforms you were required to use a USB cable.
A lot of these updates can be really useful to a lot of players. When Sony announced the PS4, one of its selling points was that it would stream automatic firmware updates and game patches while in standby, saving players from having to delay their gameplay to download firmware updates or the latest game patch before they can play. I know many in the gaming media have complained about having to perform PS3 system updates before gameplay sessions, but you would think people who write about games for a living would know when the most recent PS3 updates were out, and update their PS3s in advance.
The WiFi transfer process between the PS3 and PS Vita certainly sounds a lot more convenient than USB game transfers, but depending on your home network, this could be a slower process than USB is. However, if you’ve lost your Vita’s USB transfer cable, this must be great news.
You can read all the official details about the new update here. Firmware 4.50 is required for Playstation Network access.
