The Catch 22 of E3 June 21, 2011

Let’s face it; E3 is a media event as much as it is a trade show.  These game developers are there to show their games to the press, who in turn are expected to show it to the public.  Now, a lot of developers have decided it was easier and cheaper to just directly show their games to the public, which is why E3 went off radar for two years, but it was decided that was a bad idea and it was brought back.  Why though, with all the advances that have been made technologically over the past ten years, are the E3 exhibitors still operating within the same mindset?

If you want to see a game that’s being shown at E3 (not just a trailer, but a playable portion of the game) with the intention to write a preview of it others will read, there are usually two ways it will be displayed to you.  Of course usually the developer or publisher will choose which option they want you to have for you, but the rules for either are pretty consistent based on what my experiences were this year. The first can be a hands-on demo at a demo kiosk.  You can pick up a controller and get a chance to actually play the game.  Other than a controls guide, no instructions are usually provided for the user except to have fun and don’t die.  The other option is to wait in a line at a theater booth and see the game presented to you by the game development team while they talk you through what they’re playing and you can simply watch.

Here’s the downside of both of those options.  Demo kiosks usually will allow you to video record the game that you’re playing.  Unless E3 allowed you to have a professional cameraperson accompany you (which they didn’t for me this year) a lone journalist is going to have a really tough time video recording a live demo while playing the game!  If you’d like some examples I had to deal with this year, I had to record the Resistance 3 single player demo from my lap, I had to play Dead Rising 2: Off the Record demo one handed while using the other to record, and it made recording the Rage demo impossible.  I think Tim Buckley was the first to weigh in on this problem.  However, while his article sattired the problem, I don’t think he got to the heart of why these videos are so bad.

So it would seem that recording from a theater demo would be the best option.  You’re sitting down, the game is being played for you, and you’ll be able to hear developer commentary no problem while recording the game.  Well, that’s a no go, because for some reason video recording is still NOT allowed during a theater demo.  Don’t bother to ask they’ll usually tell you straight up before the demo starts.  In fact Randy Pitchford informed the crowd during the Aliens: Colonial Marines demo that a Sega security guard was watching us with night vision and would do terrible, terrible things to us if he so much as thought we were pulling out a camera or recording device.  Needless to say I was too scared to even put my phone into silent mode before the demo started.  Even after the four hours of waiting I did to demo the PS Vita, I was told to shut my camera off immediately before even the Q&A started (where they didn’t even say anything that wasn’t already officially announced.)

I can understand that the people who hold these theater demos don’t want poor quality offscreen videos of the demo showing up on YouTube, but my camera shoots offscreen pretty darn well (I’ve used it for some demo and beta lets plays because decent capture equipment is beyond my expenses) and I’m sure that a lot of other modern cameras that are a lot more expensive than mine can as well.  Plus, there’s only so many people that are allowed to be at E3, making the journalists almost the elected representatives of the public in general.  Don’t you want what they bring back with them to be decent?

For god’s sakes, developers, let me pull my video camera out when you do a theater demo.  I promise I’ll leave it to you to make your game look good.

History of Duke Nukem Part 3 June 21, 2011

We’re up to the third part of the official History of Duke Nukem video series, and this one is a lot different than the videos that have come up to that point.  Instead of talking about the previous Duke Nukem games, this focuses strictly on the (lets face it) controversial development cycle of Duke Nukem Forever, and features nine minutes of different people who have worked on the project, how they contributed to it, and what their take was on why deveopment took so long.

Its a fantastic watch to see these guys humbly talk about why they got involved in the project and what contributed to the development just getting out of control.

A fourth part is coming, and it will continue the interviews on Duke Nukem Forever.

Duke Nukem Forever is out for PC, Xbox 360 and PS3.

Hey guys, I have finally uploaded all the video I shot for day 3 of E3.  That day was made up of me getting a minute of the Wii U in action, getting to see the Playstation Vita, and meeting Randy Pitchford at the Aliens: Colonial Marines Demo.  It was a long wait, but it was totally worth it.

Thanks for watching through this series.  It was fantastic getting to go back to E3 after so many years of not going.  It was even better this year than the years past, and I’m so happy I got to go.  Next year promises to be even bigger and better, and I’ll keep you posted on that!

It came out while I was at E3, and because of that, it took me a while to get around to shooting and editing my unboxing of it, but here it is, the unboxing of the inFamous 2 Hero Edition, exclusive to the Playstation 3.

This game is BIG, perhaps a bit too big for me to unbox by myself.  But don’t worry, there’s a special guest star that helps me out!

Now that Bungie has struck out on their own from Microsoft to become platform agnostic, they have released their first bit of software for a non-MS platform in ten years, and its something that I’ve been wanting for quite a while.

The bungie.net app, currently avalible for free for iOS users on the Apple App Store, allows Halo Reach players to not only track their player stats online or the stats of friends, check the bungie.net news and twitter feeds, but enables its users with the ability to get exclusive content for their Halo Reach character, including the coveted Blue Flame Helmet, and the also coveted Star Nameplate, which was announced back when the other Nameplates were announced, but they never had an announcement how to get it (I don’t think they even knew at the time) until now.

People who don’t have iPhones or iPad should start friending up to people who do, as anyone who downloads the app will be able to give the Star Nameplate to seven friends who have gamertags registered as played Reach.

I’m considering having a star nameplate giveaway here tomorrow.  Check on back for the details!

What Was Cut From Duke Nukem Forever June 16, 2011

I just finished playing through Duke Nukem Forever yesterday, and upon completing it thought there was a heck of a lot more there still was to play in the game.  The original leaked design documents detailed things ranging from Duke clone armies to a whole female lead were not in the final version of the game, nor were a lot of the other enviroments that would have followed the Hoover Dam section of the game, ranging from Area 51 to a battle aboard the Alien Fathership.

In this video, I detail everything I remembered from the design documents, and compare the final version of the game to the original design document.  I also show some concept art and screenshots included in the making of books to give you an idea of what would have come in the game.

This content could still be released as DLC, the first of which is coming free to First Access Club Members soon.

I have finished uploading the second and third part of an entire vlog series I’m working on about all my experiences at this year’s Electronic Entertainment Expo.  We open on Tuesday, Day 1 of the show, and you can get a first person’s perspective on just what an individual goes through when they attend the show.  It was a lot of fun, but there’s a lot of waiting that goes into it, and here’s a glimpse of all that.

Day 2 and Day 3 are still coming soon.

Maniac unboxes the Duke Nukem Forever Balls of Steel Edition and shows some of the cool DNF swag he got at E3.  Forgive the Brad Jones voice, I wanted to sound extra snobby while I was taking a shot.
