Gaming History You Should Know – History of TRON October 10, 2021

It’s Sunday! Time for another Gaming History You Should Know, where we highlight some of the best independently produced videos about the making of video games. Today, I know we’re going to talk about a movie but I can assure you if you stick with me this story will get back to gaming.

Known for its animated classics like Snow White, Pinocchio and Cinderella, no company is more recognized in the US for groundbreaking animation as the Disney studio. However, following the death of its founder, and a decade before Disney started taking over theaters with incredible successes like Lion King and Aladdin, Disney was in a rut. The studio had weathered several theatrical flops, and would need to weather several more.

It may seem like a hopeless time, but for creative companies, being down can get them to take some more unusual risks. In the early 80s, a man named Steven Lisberger was making a name for his company working on a new type of light infused animation that used photo gels on animation cells to create a “glow” effect. At the same time, personal computers were starting to take off, and it was becoming common for nearly every office space to require interacting with a computer.

At the time, computers were dark and mysterious things to the general public and most of the contemporary Sci-Fi stories foretold computers bringing about the end of mankind. However, Steven Lisberger became interested in telling a story about just what was going on INSIDE the computer. He theorized the programs we created would be a lot like us, and they may in fact view us in the same way we would perceive a great creator. In the end, he convinced Disney to create one of the most technologically groundbreaking film of the time, TRON.

Toy Galaxy, who is famous for talking about some of the cult classic shows from the 80s and 90s, did their most recent video about TRON. It talks about the inspiration behind the film, its reception at the time and the film’s enduring legacy.

Man, I really wish TRON 2.0 was still canon.

Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Sakurai.

That’s incredible, Sora from Kingdom Hearts will be the final DLC character for Super Smash Bros Ultimate. I admit I have a soft spot for him in my heart ever since I played the original Kingdom Hearts on the PS2 back in 2004. I’ve even lobbied on this very website he should be making appearances in the Disney theme parks. Not a single park patron would bat an eye if Disney chose to project any game’s CGI opening cutscene during a nightly fireworks display. The series is that timeless.

Super Smash Bros Ultimate is out now exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.

Halo Fans everywhere can rejoice. While I appreciated the Halo Channel when it was released around the time of the Master Chief Collection, I long loved the original Halo Waypoint app for the Xbox 360. Over the past three years, it’s been disappointing to see no new exclusive content (documentaries, videos, interviews) come to the Halo Channel, and now it looks like that is changing.

In anticipation for the upcoming open beta of Halo: Infinite, Halo Channel is being rebranded as Halo Waypoint, and will offer exclusive updates about the game alongside your multiplayer statistics. That’s all I needed to hear!

Halo Waypoint (or Halo Channel) is out now for free on the Android and iOS Smart Devices.

We’re nearly a month away from the releases of the Pokémon Diamond and Pearl remakes for the Nintendo Switch and like Pokémon Legends Arceus we have seen next to nothing about the games since they were first revealed earlier this year. Now, we finally get a closer look at the games. I know their art style is controversial, but I must admit I find it charming. Take a look and make the call.

Pokémon Shining Pearl and Pokémon Brilliant Diamond are coming November 2021 exclusively to the Nintendo Switch.

One year ago, Square Enix released Marvel’s Avengers, and since then have released new multiplayer maps, single-player expansions, new heroes, and a lot more. Heck, I would be one to say that they felt Kamala Khan’s single-player campaign was one of my favorite video-game stories in quite a long time. Now, it’s been a year and Square Enix has released this trailer to celebrate all they’ve released this year. Check it out.

Of course, who knows what else will be coming in the next year? PlayStation owners haven’t gotten our Spider-Man expansion yet.

Marvel’s Avengers is out now for PC, Stadia, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4 and PS5.
