As scheduled, Apple has released iOS 8 out into the world.  The newest version of the iDevice operating system includes a ton of new features, bug fixes and improvements to the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch line of devices.  The Apple TV also has a major update released today to make it compatible with iOS 8.

You can download iOS 8 right now through either your device’s Software Update feature if it is compatible.  Just be aware that on an iPhone 5s, the download alone is over 1.1 GB and requires 5.8GB of free space to install.  If you don’t have that much free space left on your device, you can update it through iTunes.  Just be aware you must have the most recent version of iTunes installed to install iOS 8.

Anyone planning to pick up a iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus do not need to install iOS 8 to their phones when they get them, as it will come preinstalled.

Xbox Live Gold Members will be happy to see that Halo: Reach, the final Halo game developed by the franchise’s creator Bungie, is free to download for the rest of the month through Microsoft’s Games With Gold Promotion.

This is a great opportunity for all Halo fans who have not played Halo: Reach as it will not be included as part of Halo: The Master Chief Collection that is coming out for the Xbox One in November.

Halo: Reach will continue to be free for Gold Members to download until September 30th, 2014. If you want the game for free you must download it before then. The digital download of the game weighs in at over 6GB so you’re probably going to want a Hard Drive with a decent amount of free space ready before downloading the game. As with all previous Xbox 360 games offered through Games With Gold, players who download the game will be able to play it on their Xbox 360 forever, even if their Xbox Live Gold Account expires.

No word has been given about what games will be offered for free next month.

Halo: Reach is out now exclusively on the Xbox 360.

Gaming History You Should Know – Sonic Xtreme September 13, 2014

I’ve always been interested in exactly what events transpire for developers to create a completed game. I know game development is a difficult and time consuming process, but in the end it all works out. This is one of the times when things REALLY did not work out.

After the release of Sonic and Knuckles on the Genesis, Sega was riding high on their chief mascot. He had a Saturday morning cartoon on ABC for goodness sakes! Have you ever noticed there was never really a true Sonic The Hedgehog game released for the Sega Saturn? Well there was a game that Sega had in development for the Saturn and they wanted to have it out for the Christmas Season called Sonic Xtreme, but it sadly never saw the light of day.

So why did this game never get released? YouTube User miiyouandmii2 tried to find out and created a very well researched video series on the ill fated game’s development for his series, From Concept to Console. If you’re a gaming history buff like me or a fan of the blue hedgehog you owe it to yourself to give the series a look!

Nintendo Live @ The Treehouse Full Presentation September 13, 2014

Yesterday, Nintendo did an epic live webcast from their top secret translation division, The Treehouse.  This eight hour show contains previews for some highly anticipated Nintendo games expected to come out on the Wii U and 3DS by Christmas.  In it you can check out some exclusive previews of games like Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, NES Remix Ultimate,  Bayonetta 2, Hyrule Warriors, and Fantasy Life.  The show culminates in an epic preview of Super Smash Bros on the 3DS.  If you have even the slightest interest in ANY of these games, you need to watch this show, as their previews are pretty in depth, and the show’s hosts are great to watch.

If you’re interested in a few major announcements from the event, you’d be happy to know Nintendo is planning to release a 3DS demo for Super Smash Bros on September 19th, although they said that Club Nintendo members who achieved Platinum Status last year should get emailed early access codes.  The reality of this has been contested, as plenty of people are complaining they have not gotten their codes yet.   Mega Man VII is out now on the Wii U Virtual Console.
