Gaming History You Should Know – History of The Legend of Zelda Animated Series July 13, 2025

Welcome back to another Gaming History You Should Know, where we highlight some of the best independently produced documentaries on gaming history and culture! During Nintendo’s heyday in the late 80s, the Super Mario Bros Super Show was a weekday broadcast staple. Each episode would feature a live-action segment featuring Mario and Luigi responding to some comical hi-jinx while doing plumbing work in Brooklyn, NY. These live-action segments would bookend an animated episode of the Mario Bros adventures in the Mushroom Kingdom against the evil King Koopa! At least, that’s what it would be like on Mondays through Thursdays, Fridays were set aside for a special Legend of Zelda animated episode!

I remember The Legend of Zelda’s episodes were on a whole different level than the Super Mario Bros episodes. In fact, the show was of such good quality, I remember my parents bought me a VHS tape of one of the episodes for Christmas one year.

So what was the inspiration behind this show? Why did it get made and how did Nintendo approve it? The YouTube Channel Game Nerd Legacy did a fantastic documentary about the show, its history and legacy. If you were interested in the show, or watched it back in the day and were curious how it came about, give it a watch below!

To this day, this animated show remains the only officially licensed adaptation of The Legend of Zelda, but fear not, Sony has confirmed a film adaptation is currently in pre-production!

The Last of Us Part II Remastered Adds Chronological Game Mode July 9, 2025

The story of The Last of Us Part II is told in fragments, with different events taking place at different times. However, it succeeded in keeping its story structure by focusing on its core characters first before showing the perspectives of the other people involved.

Yesterday, Naughty Dog released a patch for the PS5 and PC which finally allows players to play through the game’s single-player campaign in the chronological order of events. It’s not a huge patch, at least not on the PS5, weighing in around 750MB. If you haven’t played the game in a while, or want to replay it in a whole new way, I think you should give it a shot!

The Last of Us Part II Remastered is out now for PC and PS5.

Stop Killing Games Surpasses 1.25 Million Signatures for their EU Petition July 9, 2025

Ross Scott has announced that the petition they filed in the European Union on behalf of his Stop Killing Games organization has surpassed 1.25 Million Signatures!

This is incredible news I never thought I would be fortunate enough to write about. The ongoing Sword of Damocles publishers and developers have forced into their games over the past twenty years has been the literal definition of anti-consumer practices, but without updated laws to cover software, these practices have continued without intervention for years. This petition will force the politicians of an entire continent to be made aware of these anti-consumer practices, and make their opinions on the matter known.

If you are living in a country that is part of the European Union and still want to check out the petition, you can find all the details about it here.

Anime Expo was this past weekend, and a lot of major news was announced to follow up with promises made late last year. However, during the Cyberpunk panel, we got an ENORMOUS surprise that nobody was expecting.

Cyberpunk Edgerunners season 2 will feature a new crew taking place after the events of the first season. Netflix has already confirmed they will be carrying the season when it releases, but we have no further details about any other organization offering it. Currently the second season has no release date.

Rest in Peace, Jim Shooter July 1, 2025

It is my unfortunate duty to inform all of you that comic book legend Jim Shooter has passed on. If you aren’t a fan of comic books, Jim Shooter was one of those guys who would constantly be referenced throughout the years for his accomplishments in the comic book industry, good and bad. Most people know he was a former Editor-in-Chief at Marvel, and is partially responsible for stories such as Secret Wars, which was the story that gave Spider-Man his famous black suit. He was fired from Marvel during a corporate restructuring, and failed in his bid to repurchase a stake in the company in the early 90s. We all know what happened next.

Shooter’s successors failed to maintain the happiness of the staff writing talent and artists, and they left the company en masse, forming their own competing independent publishing companies under the Image banner. Shooter himself would go on to create his own comic company called Defiant Comics, which, with the backing of The River Group, began to create its own comic book universe. However, Defiant found itself in difficult waters being an independent publisher in an industry almost entirely taken up by Marvel and DC, and eventually shuttered. He would then go on to form Valiant Comics, which saw a bit more success, and has gone through many different revisions over the years.

Please forgive me if I’ve missed out on anything or misrelayed any history, information about what happened with Defiant and Valiant Comics has been difficult to search for, even as far back as my earliest days of using the internet back in the late 90s. I first became aware of Jim Shooter when I received a Christmas gift back in the mid-90s. The gift was a completely sealed box of trading cards bearing the name “Plasm”. They were a set of collectors cards where if arranged in a 3×3 sequence, formed a 30 page story for a comic called Plasm #0. It served as the prequel story to the very first Defiant comic, Warriors of Plasm. Later on, I was able to obtain the official binder for the cards, but I was never able to fully complete that collection, as finding comic book shops willing to sell Plasm merchandise was impossible in my area. To this day, multiple limited release foil cards are still missing from my collection, although I was able to recently find several mint-in-bag issues of Warriors of Plasm, including its paperback Holiday Special.

I always hoped I would get the chance to one day meet the man and interview him about his history with Defiant, and with the creation of Plasm itself. My regret is I now know I will never get that chance. Our condolences go out Jim’s family. Rest in Peace, Shooter.

Ross Scott Ends His Stop Killing Games Campaign June 23, 2025

Ladies and gentlemen, Ross Scott.

This is a truly upsetting outcome for a campaign many gamers are seeing as our last and only hope to protect us from the gaming industry’s push for more anti-consumer policies. Ross clearly had pure intentions with his campaign, but he believed he lacked the audience to get his message to the widest masses. Still, I will be looking forward to his next project.

Gaming History You Should Know – The History of Nancy Drew Games June 22, 2025

It’s Sunday, time for a new Gaming History you Should Know, where we highlight some of the best independently produced gaming documentaries from across the web. Today, we’re striking while the iron is hot and featuring a documentary that just got released. An enduring legacy of classic literature has always been the character of Nancy Drew. Published in the books by Simon and Schuster, Nancy the girl detective has solved countless mysteries and may have single handedly saved the world more than once. But Nancy Drew has not been relegated to the bookshelves, she’s headlined feature-films, television and yes, even video games.

I first learned about Nancy Drew games when I saw a let’s play of the game where Nancy went to Japan by the creator formally known as That Dude in the Suede which may now be considered lost media. Since then, I’ve seen Nancy Drew point-and-click PC adventure games on retail store shelves, in fact my wife even had a few of them when she was growing up.

To date over twenty Nancy Drew games were released for the personal computer. How have these games endured for so long? I had no idea just how it happened, and that its initial spark came from a company famous for laserdisc arcade games! Today, we’re going to highlight the work of YouTube channel Bumbles McFumbles which did an incredible documentary about the history of this gaming franchise. Give it a watch!
