The First Minute of Internet Legends: Duct Tape Gamer January 8, 2022

Last year, we broadcasted the news that a full-length documentary was being created to discover the history behind one of the internet’s first meme, the gamer that was duct taped to the ceiling during a LAN Party. Now, if you’re too young to remember what a LAN Party was, don’t worry about it. Needless to say, it was a huge part of 90s PC and early Xbox gaming culture.

Since the trailer was revealed, we hadn’t heard very much about the full documentary’s progress until earlier this week. The documentary‘s director, Tyler Knowles, published its first minute, and provided a status update. Take it away, Tyler.

Internet Legends: Duct Tape Gamer will be released on YouTube for free later this year.

E3 2022 Will Be Virtual January 8, 2022

The Electronic Entertainment Expo has officially announced that their 2022 E3 event will once again be virtual. This will mark the third year no E3 event has taken place in a physical location, and all announcements from the event will once again be broadcasted over the web.

E3 has always held a special place in my heart since I first heard about it in 1999. To be allowed into E3 was a sign you had “made it” in the gaming industry, and it had been considered a high honor for your game to be previewed at the event. However, the current world events have made international travel a dicey prospect.

We will keep you all posted with the details on how to check out the event online as they are made available.

Lost Media – Help Me Find this 90s Disney Channel Arcade Movie January 2, 2022

Ten years ago, Maniac wrote about a movie he saw on the Disney Channel back when it was a premium cable station. It was about a group of teenagers that had their own basement arcade and followed their antics as they played a game together. Unfortunately, he was never able to learn it’s name, and because of that has been unable to find it or any further information about it. However, Maniac has noticed that the search for Lost Media has become a popular pastime online over the past few years with its own major subculture.

With all that in mind, Maniac humbly provides his plea on for someone to assist him with finding this obscure film. In the video below, he provides all the details he remembers about what he saw happen in the movie, and the details of the search he’s done up to this point. Enjoy.

Hope this video has been some help to anyone interested in assisting with the search. Maniac has already deduced this movie would have broadcasted no later than October 1992. Due to its age and obscurity, finding information about any Disney Channel content online has been difficult, and it’s possible the only record of the movie’s existence is in the pages of an old issue of Disney Channel Magazine.

Happy New Year!

I’m so happy to make this announcement. We are big fans of the ongoing .HACK// (pronounced “Dot Hack “) franchise and its great to see the franchise get some love here in the West. Yesterday, Bandai Namco announced .HACK//G.U. LAST RECODE is coming to the Nintendo Switch. Here’s the official announcement trailer!

If you’re unfamiliar with .HACK//, and want a better idea as to why I’m so excited about this announcement I recommend you check out our coverage during last year’s Dot Hack Tribute Day!

Now if we can only get a remaster of the four original episodic games…or maybe a port of some of the later games that never released in the West.

.HACK//G.U. LAST RECODE is coming March 11th, 2022 for the Nintendo Switch. It is out now for PC and PS4.

It is the end of an era. Normally, we don’t talk about the Nintendo Minute, but today we had to make an exception. Nintendo Minute, was a video series on the official Nintendo YouTube channel where hosts Kit and Krista would complete silly challenges, preview upcoming games, and talk about Nintendo news. Today, that series has just posted its final episode. Please enjoy.

I admit I will miss this show, the hosts had great chemistry and it did expose me to some games I wouldn’t have played otherwise, like 198x. Kit and Krista, I salute you!

343 Industries has released a prequel series to Halo: Infinite in the form of an audio podcast. This is not unusual, as there was a podcast for Halo 5, and some of the content from Halo 2’s Ilovebees campaign certainly could be considered a precursor podcast before the word was officially coined.

The new series, Memory Agent, follows the story of a UNSC Lieutenant as they take on the momentous task of delivering an important encryption key to Master Chief. The series is currently in 6-parts and averages around 8 minutes an episode. The podcast is currently exclusive to Spotify and can only be listened to on that service. You can listen to all six parts here.

Halo: Infinite is out now for PC, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.

Gaming History You Should Know – Springboard: The First Smartphone December 19, 2021

I know what you’re thinking, we already had a Gaming History You Should Know earlier in the week. Merry Christmas, here’s a bonus article that was too good to save for later!

Back in the late 90s and early 00s, Portable Digital Assistants (PDAs) were the go-to option for people who needed a digital device on their person. A PDA, like the famous Palm Pilot, could keep digital notes, addresses, schedule, and some of the later models were even capable of mobile e-mail. However, unlike today’s smartphones (which can also do all of that) you couldn’t make a call with a PDA. If you wanted to make a call on the go, you’d need to pull your cell phone out of a different pocket to make that call.

The original founders of Palm knew that the future of PDAs would require the ability to make calls. However, Palm’s owners and the cell phone providers at the time disagreed, preferring to keep business as usual until time itself ended. So, Palm’s owners left the company and formed a new one, Handspring. The rest of that story is the subject of today’s history lesson.

The guys over at The Verge just produced this fantastic documentary on the history of Handspring. In it, they interview some of the company founders, dig deep into the products the company released, and talk about the enduring legacy of the smartphone. Check it out!

Gaming History You Should Know – Where Did Street Fighter’s Hadouken Come From December 17, 2021

I know it isn’t Sunday yet, but this was too good a scoop to not talk about. One of the most famous fighting moves in the history of video games is the Hadouken from Street Fighter. When done correctly by a trained artist like Ken or Ryu, the move allows its wielder to throw a ball of fire out of their hands towards their opponent.

Of course, in real life the Hadouken doesn’t exist…or does it? Sadly, there is no known way to actually perform a fighting move that will enable you to create fire out of nothing. However, we have seen in the game Ken and Ryu both perform a very distinctive move with their hands before the fire is thrown. Does that move have any basis in real martial arts? YouTube historian Mr. Dan, host of Art of One Dojo, has gotten to the bottom of this age old question. He was able to interview the legendary Johnpaul Williams, who was used as the model for the original arcade games. During this interview, we’ve discovered the real history of the iconic move. Guys, we’ve been doing it wrong this whole time.

Street Fighter games are out now on multiple platforms including the arcade.
