In honor of Halloween, GameXcess.net’s latest podcast is focused on a fantastic video game horror series, Dead Rising.  The game has spawned two major titles, two remakes, and two downloadable games.  Where many games focus specifically on the fear, Dead Rising is one of the rare franchises that makes you think about the impact we as humans have had, and what the consequences of our actions could bring.Well that, and they’re great open world zombie hack and slash games where everything can become a weapon, and anywhere can be explored.

As usual for any site podcast we talk about the origins of the series, our experiences playing it, and what the future holds for the series.  Enjoy!

The GameXcess.net Podcast returns!  This week, we’re going to talk about two games made by the same brothers who created the classic Wing Commander series, Starlancer and Freelancer.  These games were two flight simulator games for the PC which shared a common lore but could not be more different.  While they both borrowed heavily from games like Wing Commander and Privateer, I felt they brought something new to a once-great genre that had stagnated.

Ten years after Freelancer’s release, Maniac talks about the Lancer series from Digital Anvil and Microsoft.

Maniac talks about SiN for the PC by Ritual Entertainment.  It was a pioneering series which brought heavy interactivity and polish to the genre made by a very talented company.  Alas, this is a sad story with a sad ending, but there are two very good games and one of the first direct to video animated feaures for a video game to show for it.

This is SiN’s story, give it a listen.

Mario Podcast December 18, 2012

During the Mario Weekend I hosted on the site, I had a request from a fan that I do a Mario Podcast for the event.  It was an interesting request, as it was something that I hadn’t planned to do.  However, the more I thought about it the more I thought it was the right idea to do a podcast on Mario.

Mario is probably one of the most enduring mascots of my lifetime, and he continues to appear in new games even to this day.  If I was going to do Mario justice I was going to need a lot of time, because I was going to have plenty to talk about.

Maniac releases the most requested podcast for gamexcess.net!  That’s right we’re going to be talking about Wolfenstein, from id Software.  In this podcast, I’m going to mostly be talking about the history behind the original game, the games in the series, and finally where I think the series is headed.

Wolfenstein is probably one of the first major PC gaming action franchises, and to this day its the game most old-school PC gamers recognise as the first FPS they ever played.

Note:  I made a small error during the recording of the podcast that I was not able to fix in post production.  I accidentally stated that Return to Castle Wolfenstein was created by Splash Damage, when in fact it was created by Gray Matter and Nerve.  Splash Damage made the Enemy Territory games.
