With the release of the 3DS XL I was finally able to unbox the copy of Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance that has been sitting in its box for over a week.  A continuation of the Kingdom Hearts series by Square Enix, the game blends in famous Disney and Final Fantasy characters and puts them in enviroments from some of the best Disney movies over the past fifty years.

If you want to know more about the Kingdom Hearts series, you should check out my podcast on the subject, produced just before the new game was released.

Kingdom Hearts Dream Drop Distance is exclusive to the Nintendo 3DS.

Even if you bought a 3DS XL at launch, you’re going to still need to update it.  Here’s how to do it manually.

Your 3DS XL must be updated to its most recent version in order to access the Nintendo Store.

Nintendo 3DS XL Initial Setup August 20, 2012

Maniac shows the initial setup screens on the Nintendo 3DS XL and its initial 3D effect.  The screens are pretty basic when you set up things like time and internet settings, but the 3D startup effect really was unique.

The 3DS will ask you at start to set up your current time and location, your WiFi settings, user profile and parental settings.  Some of these options, like internet or parental settings can be skipped, but if you already have a WiFi network set up in your home for example, I don’t recommend skipping the initial setup, as it is more convenient to set it up at first use.

Unfortunately the camera had some problems picking up the 3D effect, but it was there when I looked directly at the screen.

The Nintendo 3DS XL is out now.

When Maniac asks questions about classic Role Playing Games, he goes to Twitch.  Twitch has been playing RPGs since the days of the Super Nintendo, and all through the lifespan of the Playstation generation.

Before our discussion tonight about some recent RPG releases, Maniac wanted to get Twitch’s quick opinion on a wide range of Square-Enix games.  He has played the majority of the games presented to him, with the exception of the more recent releases.  As he takes a tongue-in-cheek step down memory lane, he gives his thoughts on some of the Final Fantasy games.

More videos will be coming next week!

Doing a bit of a blast from the past today and doing an unboxing of a game that launched last year for the Sony PSP.  The 3rd Birthday is a PSP exclusive game which is a psudo-sequel to the Parasite Eve series for the original Playstation.  The game has met with mixed reviews, but I decided to hold off judgement on it until I played the game for myself.

With all the game developers that are cutting corners over the past year by releasing games without manuals or in stripped down packages, imagine my suprise when I opened up this game.

If you’re interested in seeing the Happy Video Game Nerd’s review of the Parasite Eve series, you can check it out here.

The 3rd Birthday is out exclusive to the Sony PSP.

Maniac downloaded Patch 2.0 for Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, adding, among other things, the option to do a full game installation.  By doing a full game installation, you will not have to sit through an install the game each time you change acts.

But how long does it take to install this game fully?  Lets find out.

This month marks the 26th anniversary of the release of Metroid in Japan, and boy what a ride has it been.  What a better time for Maniac to do a podcast about Metroid by Nintendo.  Give it a listen and hear him talk about the series, its history, what his experiences were playing it, and where he thinks the platform is going.

Happy Birthday, Samus.

UPDATE: For those of you who would like direct links to anything I mentioned during the podcast, I have posted the full podcast notes along with links on this page.
