Memories of Maniac – Superhuman Samurai Syber Squad October 15, 2024

Let’s talk about a show that was literally 30 years ahead of its time, shall we? Let me take you back to the early-to-mid 1990s. A production company discovers they can make a literal fortune broadcasting already produced Japanese television shows. They discovered if they cut out the action scenes and filmed original footage with recasted American actors, as long as they wrote a compelling story young audiences would flock to watch it.

A company called DiC, famous for children’s programming in the 80s and 90s, decided to throw their hat into the ring and produce their own American superhero action show. They based their series on a Japanese show about a cyberspace superhero at a time when computers were gaining popularity in the west. They cast it with incredible actors, including a young Matthew Lawrence. They wrote some pretty special original episodes using tropes that, while considered quaint now, were fresh in the 90s. Oh and of course they made Tim Curry voice the villain.

The show was called Superhuman Samurai Syber Squad. Despite few people remembering it (it had a limited run of just over fifty episodes over the course of a year), Maniac LOVED the show, and now he’s going to share his unscripted feelings about it thirty years after it originally broadcast, and talk about its enduring legacy, and how well it predicted the present day. This video is nearly an hour long so buckle in people, and let’s SAMURAIZE, GUYS!

Lost Media – Halo Outpost Discovery’s Ring Experience Dome Video October 14, 2024

In 2019, six cities in the United States were allowed to enter the Halo Universe for one weekend. A Halo-themed mini-convention called Halo: Outpost Discovery took place, and people who attended were able to check out interactive Halo experiences inspired by the franchise ranging from a simulator to an escape room. Today, we’re going to talk about one piece of media created specifically for the event, projected onto a custom dome screen, which covered the in-universe history of Halo, as well as shown a brand-new Halo ring inside and out.

The experience was absolutely done with respect to the franchise and despite the fact that the projector’s bulb was not set to its maximum possible brightness, the video brought this long-time Halo fan to tears. Since Outpost Discovery 2019 wrapped, no other Outpost Discovery has taken place, and the Ring Experience dome video has not made any appearances online. Let’s talk about it.

Welcome back to Lost Media! Today we’re going to be discussing one of the most popular forms of LM, Theme Park Lost Media! However, today we won’t be talking about a ride that was shuttered or a show that was closed, we’ll be discussing something most people, including Disney and AT&T historians, have no idea ever existed.

the mid-90s, EPCOT’s Spaceship Earth was sponsored by AT&T, and as the sponsor they offered a unique attraction many fans of the company may not even be aware existed. A small motion simulator in front of a large screen was located in Spaceship Earth’s Network Neighborhood. If you had the chance to try it out, you’d find yourself shrunk to the size of an electron and ride across AT&T’s communication cables.

Tales from IT – Upgrading Home Automation Before a Protocol is Discontinued July 20, 2024

Welcome back to Tales from IT! Today, Maniac tells a story about a time he worked with a good friend of his father. He had mobility issues and set up an early automation service in his home to assist him with controlling things like his lights and room temperature. Since these predated the prevalence of smart devices, his devices did not connect to Wi-Fi, they used a different protocol that needed a compatible control hub to operate. However, the control hub his devices were using was reliant on a central online server, and that server was being shut down. The clock was ticking, he needed Maniac to help him migrate his devices so they could still be functional before his existing automation service shut down.

Maniac had never messed with home automation before, but he did have a lot of ideas for ways to improve and upgrade this man’s home. Could he finish the job before the old service shut down? Watch and find out!

FAIL – How and Why Hollywood’s Streaming Services Will Fail June 29, 2024

Welcome back to FAIL, where Maniac discusses some of the worst executive decisions in the gaming and film industries.

Since Netflix proved there was a major market for digital streaming services with their massive subscriber number, the suits running major Hollywood studios who owned the content Netflix was broadcasting believed they were smart enough to launch a competing service and cut Netflix out as a middle man.

Several years ago, a major conglomerate decided to break itself up. The consequences were as immediate as they were disastrous to both companies. Their last remaining plan to save face was to create their own exclusive streaming service and create an exclusive show for it that would serve as a continuation of a beloved franchise. Other major companies have since followed suit, and all have seen low to lukewarm success.

What these companies failed to realize was that building and maintaining an exclusive video on demand streaming service is not free. More importantly, they may have known you will need to release exclusive shows on your service for people to want to sign up for it, it is not free to make them.

So what happens when you spend millions upon millions of dollars of your studio’s money on movies and shows that only have one potential revenue stream, a monthly streaming subscription fee that many consumers are unwilling to see as a good value? Watch the video below and see our perspective on it.

Tales from IT – Gaming is Not Increasing Your Electric Bill June 20, 2024

Getting a little personal here with today’s Tales from IT. Most of his life, Maniac’s parents had blamed him for his home’s exorbitant electrical bills. They assumed that playing on a 300watt PC during his downtime not at school (so, five to seven hours a day) was causing their monthly electric bills to clear over four-hundred dollars. At the same time, they had a convenient amnesia over the fact their home also had a full-time deep freezer, a full refrigerator, two mini (bar) fridges, two basement dehumidifiers, and two of the most inefficient central air units that had ever been constructed.

So how much power does playing video games really take up? Well, let’s give it a watch.
