About Direct Video Game Capturing May 8, 2013

Some of you regular viewers may be aware that I typically do not include directly captured game footage with my site’s videos. In the videos where I have shown game footage it would usually be restricted to during a convention, beta test, or when I’m doing a short commentary. In these cases, I have usually stuck to doing an off-screen capture using the same camera that I have shot all my videos on. The camera is quite good at capturing video footage clearly, but it has nowhere near the same quality that a direct video capture can provide.
There are several reasons why I have been unable to produce videos using a direct capture system, the most obvious one being the cost. The cost of some of these devices can range around what I paid for my site’s HD video camera, and with the amount of games (and game consoles) that have been coming out in the past few years, and with my intention to focus the site’s content more on written articles, voice recorded podcasts, and videos I would be appearing in myself, buying a new game capture device was not on the top of my list for site expenses.
The other reason was that up to this point, I have been quite unhappy with the wide majority of capture devices available at retail. First off, when I first started shopping around for them, the vast majority of them couldn’t capture in HD, even if they said they were HD on the box! Since I shoot my site videos in 1080p HD, I have been waiting for a decent capture device to release that would meet that specification, on top of all the other specifications I had for it. Some of these personal specifications included 1080p HD capture support, ease of connectivity, external storage support, console and PC compatibility and HDMI support. We live in the HD game world, and a simple SD capture device wasn’t going to be good enough for me. Lets face it, if I was going to pay money for something, I wanted it to be able to do everything I needed, and if I couldn’t get it I was willing to wait.
Well, some new capture devices have hit the market which now meet my specifications perfectly, and I have been considering finally putting one on order in order to capture game footage for upcoming site videos.
My question is this, what new kinds of video series would you like to see on the site that could make the best use of this?

Happy New Year everyone! I hope everyone is enjoying the start of 2013 and is spending it safely with friends and family! I figured since it was the end of the holiday season, the time was right to spend a day talking about the little pocket monsters that have captured our hearts and been one of Nintendo’s most successful properties in the past ten years. That’s right, today is Pokémon Day!
Recently, I wrote an essay on the site entitled “Do We All Live in a Pokémon World“. While writing that essay, I did a ton of research all across the web and found a lot of great content that I would love to share with all of you. There is just so much fan made Pokémon content across the world-wide web it would take the entire new year to share all of it with you, so that is why I’m going to show some of my favorites.
So for the rest of the day, sit back and relax, as I share some of my favorite Pokémon videos from across the web. Keep your eyes glued on the site for the rest of the day as the site will get regular updates with a ton of different content. I hope you enjoy and Happy New Year to all!

Maniac here. My apologies for taking this long to get back to you guys, but like many of you my home was impacted by Hurricane Sandy. While I have been perfectly fine and healthy since the storm passed, several of my home’s utilities were knocked offline during the storm and have only come online just within the last few minutes.
I did not want to post any information on the site about the event as I had no timeline for my utilities to be restored. Rest assured that gamexcess.net is perfectly fine, and will continue to operate normally. In fact, I shot a new site video during the outage, the first ever video game review gamexcess.net has ever done, and more content was designed during the outage.
So sit back, relax and enjoy. We’re back.

Given the fact that its October, we have been planning to have an entire day dedicated to the Silent Hill series, one of the most enduring franchises of the past decade. It has seen numerous releases in both the past and current generations, and the original releases still scare us to this day. In honor of the past twelve years of the franchise and the release of the second feature film tonight, gameXcess.net is going to be declaring today Silent Hill Day!
If you haven’t played any of the games yet and want to, here’s a video I recently did where I talked about some great deals I got on the more recent games.
Stay tuned to this site for the rest of the day for some great Silent Hill related content from across the web!

Yesterday, the Nintendo 3DS XL launched in North America. In honor of that event, gamexcess.net is announcing that today is 3DS Day on the site! The Nintendo 3DS XL is the newest version of the Nintendo 3DS, which sports a larger screen and longer battery life than the original Nintendo 3DS.
If you’re like I was, and was really curious just how Nintendo was able to create a 3D device without the need of special glasses, then I would like to draw your attention to this video produced by Clan of the Gray Wolf, where they talk about the technical specifics behind just how 3D works, and what Nintendo has done with this new device.
We will be doing plenty of coverage about the Nintendo 3DS XL for the rest of the day. You can expect unboxings and how-to videos for the new device to be coming over the course of the day!
The Nintendo 3DS XL is out now in North America for a price of $199US. If you’re upgrading from a previous DS or 3DS device, I recommend checking out this page for the information on how to transfer all your currently existing game data to a new device.
