Playstation Store May Offer Early Downloads May 17, 2012

From the looks of it, the concept of preordering from the Playstation Store is about to get a major revamp.  I have talked earlier when Sony started to take preorders from the Playstation Store for unreleased games, and it looks like there has been a new development in that department.  When Sony started to take digital preorders I questioned the logic of this move.  Preordering digital content, unless there’s some sort of monetary bargin on the consumer’s end, is pointless.  The reason being that unlike with a physical medium, you have no danger of running out of copies of something, and unlike STEAM, the user would still be forced to download their game upon release just as anyone else who takes the second to purchase it on release day does.

There have been reports coming in that Sony intends to allow early downloading of games preordered for the Playstation 3, which will become unlocked on release day.  STEAM has had this feature since it was founded, in fact this has partially been the reason why sales for STEAM have been so successful, because it allowed users to play their games at the very second of their release.

The first game to offer this feature looks to be Sorcery.  However, the reports that I’m reading from this are all coming from the UK and as such I don’t know if this option will be avalible to US users (who are still waiting on that Playstation Network iPhone app, Sony).
