Want to Support gameXcess? July 9, 2010

I made it no secret when I did my article on how to transfer data to a new Xbox 360 slim that I make no money whatsoever from this website.  I do this website not because I make money, but because I want to offer a better option for gaming news than what is currently offered by “larger” sites.  WordPress does not allow advertising on their websites (which I cannot understand if you own your own domain), and my YouTube videos are also devoid of advertising.  Because of that, I also do my best to pull any trailers or content the second they become sponsored in order to keep the playing field even, and also because I consider them pretty harassing.

The downside of this is without any income I’m not able to get all of the latest hardware I’d like to in order to do the content I’d like to do on this website.  I just can’t afford it.

To rectify this I was considering linking something like an Amazon wish list to the website, with a whole bunch of stuff I’d like to review or comment on but obviously can’t due to cost.  The kinds of things on the wish list would mostly just be games or the new Xbox 360 Slim.  Obviously nobody would be under any obligation to even look at the list, but I could assure you that I would happily unbox and video review anything sent to me for the site.

I think it would be the best option, it would allow me to keep new content coming on the website, and keep the site advertising free.  It also shouldn’t upset wordpress, but who knows.

PS3 3D Blu-Ray Support in September July 9, 2010

You may have previously noticed Sony was promoting what they called 3D Support for the Playstation 3 back when Firmware version 3.30 was coming out, and then activated that functionality when they released 3D-Enabled Bravia HDTVs.

Well apparently, that 3D firmware did not include the full functionality of 3D, it only enabled native 3D in supported video games, not for 3D Blu-Ray as I had originally believed.  Blu-Ray.com sets the record straight and reports that 3D support for Blu-Ray is coming, but not until September.

Seriously?  Unless you really had your heart set on watching “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs” (and only that movie) in 3D you should be just fine.  However I just don’t think 3D is going to be as successful as all these companies think it’s going to be (because the price is just out of this world and content is still pretty non-existant).

3D photo support will come some time after Blu-Ray support, making the PS3 compatible with 3D images taken by the upcoming 3D Sony Cyber-Shot.

Dragon Age II Announced July 8, 2010

Bioware has announced today a sequel to their extremely popular Dragon Age series is in development.

Dragon Age: Origins was a harken back to the early days of Bioware’s successful fantasy RPGs such as Neverwinter Nights. The game was critically praised and commercially successful.

Unlike the first game, which offered many possible origins for your character, this sequel will offer a new character and a new story. You will play as a male or female character, forced to survive in an ever changing world. Your backstory will be constant in the game, and you will likely delve deeper into it as you play.

Dragon Age II is slated for release March 2011. The first game was released for PC, PS3 and XBox 360, and Dragon’s Age II is expected to support the same platforms.

Bungie Day News, The Return of Blood Gulch July 8, 2010

7/7 is Bungie Day, and this was a major one.  Bungie has announced some major updates for their next game, Halo Reach, the big one being the return of Blood Gulch as a multiplayer map.

The return of Blood Gulch has made the team at Red vs Blue very happy, as this official video demonstrates.  Blood Gulch has been a staple of their series since the very first episodes, but the map was not included in Halo 3, and was replaced with Valhalla.  It’s nice to see the map is back, and that the Reach version will be expanded.  The original Blood Gulch is considered one of the best multiplayer maps ever made, perfectly balanced for free for all, capture the flag, and team deathmatch.

Gamestop has announced it will offer exclusive downloadable armor permutations to preorders of Halo Reach, including an exclusive grenade belt and chest armor.  Looks like I’m switching my preorder to them.  There’s already the offer of Recon Armor to all day one purchases of the game.

More will be shown at Comic-Con this year.

Halo Reach will release September 14th, 2010 exclusive to Xbox 360.

EA has announced that its first downloadable game in the Dead Space franchise will be Dead Space Ignition, a downloadable game in the same vein as a choose your own adventure graphic novel.  With a story from Anthony Jenson, the writer from  fantastic Dead Space Graphic Novel (free download on Xbox Live and Playstation Network, and included with Dead Space Extraction) this downloadable game will be a must own for people unable to wait for Dead Space 2.

I’m pretty excited about this one.  Ignition will tell the story leading up to Dead Space 2, hopefully it will tell some information about what happened to Issac between the first and second games, and perhaps if we’re really lucky, McNeil and the rest of the characters from Dead Space Extraction.  There will be three hacking minigames included with the game and will unlock an exclusive suit in Dead Space 2.

Dead Space Ignition will release for download on Xbox Live Arcade and Playstation Network Fall 2010.

What Makes Good Atmosphere in a Video Game Part 1: Fake Ads July 7, 2010

This series is going to be a little different than what you might’ve read before.  I’m not going to be talking about graphics or sound in any of the articles.  For this article series, I’m going to be doing something a bit different than you might expect.  I’m going to be talking about “atmosphere” in levels of immersion.  Now this immersion can mean anything in the game that adds believability to the environment.

I’m going to devote the first part of this series to talking about in-game advertising.  Don’t get me wrong, I love advertising in games, so long as the product is fake.  Why is fake advertising more immersive than real advertising?  Because seeing a billboard for a product that you know can only exist in the game adds a level of immersion that further cements the logic of the setting, and can show the player that there is a deeper connection with the world behind the scenes than just the game itself.

The No More Heroes games are my favorite for the Nintendo Wii.  I was one of the few people that actually enjoyed the open world aspect of the first game and was also one of the few disappointed it was removed in the sequel.  While there were plenty of limitations to the open world which drew you out of the immersion of the game, to me the setting was incredibly real.  One billboard existed along the coastline, advertising a non-existent product.  As a person who lived on the West Coast of the US for a short time, seeing that billboard in the open world of No More Heroes felt like I was back there every time I played.

Then there was 2008’s Dead Space.  Peng, f33l, Sun. The fake ads all over the ship were the big testimony for me that not only people had lived on the ship but there was a larger universe out there.  Seeing Sun vending machines with cans strewn all over the place around it was jarring.  The vending machines were similar in style to our own, but yet still futuristic.  Showing that they had been damaged to the point of being broken into with all of that soda being ignored gave deeper credibility that a once lived in environment was now vacant, and whatever alien force left had no interest in our petty beverage choices.

This doesn’t work when I see real advertisements in games, I hate seeing real products in games (with the exception of Bawls, I’ll get to that later).  Nothing can throw me out of the game’s immersion more than seeing an advertisement for something real, even if the game is “realistic”.  Every time I see something real in a video game it throws me out of the action because there’s an anchor to the real world that pulled me out.

There’s also the practical application of using real world products in your games, such as what if the game doesn’t show your product as very reliable?  Cue Alan Wake, which showed the world Energizer Batteries ™ won’t last more than a few seconds in a flashlight without having to be replaced.  At least the unsponsored car batteries in the game would fully restore in a few seconds to a full charge regardless of how long the high beams were left on with no permanent damage or need to ever be replaced.

In fact the only time I could think of a real product being served well in a game (if not completely out of place) was the Bawls product placement in 2002’s Run Like Hell.  Of course the only reason I liked this was because Bawls is my favorite soda, and it was nice to see that the company, hundreds of years in the future, would finally have vending machines all over the place, and be served in arcades, bars, fitness rooms, and apartment hallways.  Oh and they also heal injuries sustained from fighting alien monsters too.  Not too much, but if you drink enough of them you won’t have to see a doctor.  About 20 could probably return you from near death.

Want reliability?  I’ll stick with Brand-X™!

Now this was just one article and I know I barely scratched the surface of some truly great fake products in games.  What are your favorite fake products?  Come back next time for Part 2 of “What Makes Good Atmosphere in a Video Game”: Fake Radio Shows.

Editorial Series Coming Soon: “What Makes Good Atmosphere in a Video Game?” July 6, 2010

Due to the lack of Post E3 ™ news, I’ve found myself without much to post to you regular viewers.

To correct this, I’ve decided to do an editorial series over the next few days, entitled “What Makes Good Atmosphere in a Video Game?”  Every editorial will be about a different atmospheric feature.  The important thing however will be that these items (which are my opinion and probably my opinion only) will be quite suprising.  Suprising because I’m not going to talk about what you think I’m going to talk about.  Graphics and sound will NOT be listed.

So stay tuned for, “What Makes Good Atmosphere in a Video Game? Part 1:  Fake Ads”.  The first part in an ongoing series, coming soon.

More Site Updates July 3, 2010

Due to the expected lack of Post-E3 ™ news I haven’t been able to post as much new information as I’d like to for all my regular readers.  So I’ve been working more on tweaking and refining the backend of the site for optimal browsing pleasure.

You’ll notice there’s now a subscription bar in the lower right corner of the page under the twitter feed.  You’ll also notice a new About… section in the sidebar, with new information on the site and it’s purpose.  I decided to keep the “about me” tab for anyone interested in who I am, and have the “about” be for the site itself.  Hopefully that’ll assist the new people coming in from the search engines.

Enjoy the changes.
